Humanity has endured an endless repetition of migration and settlement to ensure the survival and prosperity of the community. Even amid this ongoing history of migration, communities have transmitted and upheld intangible assets such as traditional customs, knowledge, rites, and skills through the generations. Furthermore, the fusion, transformation, and hybridization of cultures in the destinations of human migration constitutes a process that has led to the emergence of new, distinct forms of intangible cultural heritage.
Intangible cultural heritage(ICH) serves as a pivotal point for forging solidarity in the community throughout the process in which migrants safeguard their history and culture, as well as a vital clue toward resolving tensions that arise in the process of understanding and accepting new cultures in relation to the natives of the migratory destinations and between different generations.
Modern phenomena such as globalization and technological advancements have expanded upon the traditional concepts of diaspora and migration, which are now further diversifying the relevant research field as they are discussed in parallel to new trends and discourses such as multiculturalism, digitalization, and transnationalism.
The United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development also recognizes that migration is a driving force of sustainable development for migrants and local communities alike, and UNESCO is accordingly directing its focus on the role of human movement on changes in the transmission environment with regard to intangible cultural heritage and the retention of cultural diversity.
To this end, the 2024 World Forum for Intangible Cultural Heritage has adopted the theme of “Migration : Broadening the Horizon of Intangible Cultural Heritage” to examine the term of migration from the perspective of ICH and discuss its impact and role within our lives. Simultaneously, it will present an opportunity to discuss changing migratory trends in modern society and the subsequent transformation of ICH.
We hereby extend our cordial invitation for your attendance at this meaningful occasion to shed new light on the cultural diversity of humanity from the perspective of ICH and migration.
